For those of you who may be wondering about this design, the following history is provided: Shortly after I had arrived in Viet Nam (1970) a small
package arrived from Ann. In it was a small medallion on a gold chain. The
medallion was unusual in that it had a diamond shape. The design on its’ face
showed four arrows, forming a cross, and pointing out from the center of the
medal. I thought the design was most clever in that the arrows pointing out
formed four other arrows, each pointing in to the center. Ann had bought it at a
catholic gift shop and had it blest by a priest. She wanted me to wear it as a
talisman. In examining it closely, I turned it over and found inscribed on the
back, in very small letters, “Made in Israel”. Considering my family
background, I thought it very appropriate. I wore it throughout my tour in
Vietnam and I guess it did its’ job well. Although I sometimes found myself in
dangerous circumstances, I was never harmed in any way. We eventually decided to
adopt the little diamond shaped medallion as our family crest. Ann
is fond of saying that the arrows mean “what you do to others will come back
to you.” Through the years I have had duplicates made in both silver
and gold, both as medallions and rings. Each of our children, their spouses, and
our grandchildren have been presented with one. I have worn this same symbol
since 1970. |
